A pelvic ultrasound is a painless scan of the uterus and ovaries used to investigate pelvic pain, abnormal bleeding or a suspected cyst. At LPHG it costs £220, takes about 30 minutes and needs no GP referral. A consultant radiologist issues a written report within 24 hours.
What this scan shows
- The size, shape and lining of the uterus
- Ovarian cysts and their appearance
- Fibroids and their approximate size and position
- The thickness of the endometrium
- Fluid collections within the pelvis
- Structural causes of pelvic pain or abnormal bleeding
What it cannot show
- Whether a cyst or growth is cancerous, which needs further tests
- Very early or subtle changes inside the fallopian tubes
- The cause of pain that arises outside the reproductive organs

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a transvaginal scan as well?
A transvaginal scan gives a clearer view of the ovaries and uterine lining, so it is often offered alongside the abdominal scan. It is your choice, and a chaperone is available throughout.
Do I need a full bladder?
Yes, for the abdominal part of the scan a comfortably full bladder lifts the bowel out of the way and improves the image. You can empty it before any transvaginal scan.
Is a pelvic ultrasound painful?
No. The abdominal scan uses a probe on the skin with warm gel. A transvaginal scan may feel like a smear test but should not be painful.
When will I get my results?
A written report from a consultant radiologist is issued within 24 hours, and the main findings are usually explained to you during the appointment.
