Can an ultrasound diagnose PCOS by itself?
No. PCOS is diagnosed when at least two of three features are present: irregular periods, raised androgens, and polycystic ovaries on ultrasound. The scan assesses the third feature.
Why is a transvaginal scan recommended for PCOS?
A transvaginal scan gives the detail needed to count small follicles accurately, which an abdominal scan cannot always do. It is your choice, and a chaperone is available.
Do I need blood tests as well?
Usually, yes. Blood tests measure hormone levels that, alongside your symptoms and this scan, allow a full assessment. We can arrange these for you.
Does a polycystic appearance always mean I have PCOS?
No. Some women have polycystic-looking ovaries without the syndrome. The appearance only matters alongside symptoms such as irregular periods or raised androgen levels.
