How early can I have a pregnancy scan?
A meaningful early pregnancy scan is usually possible from around six weeks, when a heartbeat can often be seen. Before this it may be too early to give a clear result, and we may suggest rebooking in a week or two.
Do I need a GP referral for a pregnancy scan?
No. You can book an early pregnancy or dating scan directly. If your scan raises anything that needs further care, we can refer you to an obstetric team.
Will the scan be abdominal or internal?
This depends on how many weeks pregnant you are. In very early pregnancy a transvaginal (internal) scan often gives the clearest view. Your sonographer will explain the options and only proceed with your consent.
