What this scan shows
- The number of fibroids present
- The size of each fibroid in millimetres
- Whether fibroids sit within the wall, cavity or outer surface of the uterus
- The effect of fibroids on the uterine lining
- Changes in fibroid size compared with a previous scan
- Other causes of heavy or painful periods, such as ovarian cysts
What it cannot show
- Whether a fibroid is anything other than benign, which is very rare
- The best treatment choice, which needs a gynaecology consultation
- Fine detail sometimes better seen on an MRI before surgery

Will the scan tell me if my fibroids need treating?

Do I need a full bladder?
Yes, for the abdominal scan. A comfortably full bladder improves the image. You can empty it before any transvaginal scan, which shows the uterine cavity in more detail.
How often should fibroids be rescanned?
Many women have a follow-up scan every 6 to 12 months to track size, but the interval depends on your symptoms. Bring any previous report so we can compare.
When will I get my results?
A written report from a consultant radiologist is issued within 24 hours, and the main findings are usually explained to you during the appointment.
