Liver Ultrasound

30 minutes appointment Imaging & Diagnostics

£250

A liver ultrasound is a focused scan of the liver used to assess its size, texture and blood flow, and to look for fatty change, cysts or masses. At LPHG it costs £250 and needs no GP referral. A consultant radiologist performs the scan, with a written report within 24 hours.

What this scan shows

  • Fatty liver (steatosis) and its extent
  • Liver size and texture
  • Cysts and simple masses
  • Signs of scarring or cirrhosis
  • Blood flow through the liver vessels
  • The gallbladder and bile ducts

What it cannot show

  • The degree of fibrosis, which a FibroScan measures
  • Small or early tumours that need CT or MRI
  • The cause of abnormal liver enzymes on its own

Our liver ultrasound focuses on the liver and bile ducts, and is a common first-line test for fatty liver and abnormal liver blood results.

Where scarring needs to be assessed, it pairs naturally with a FibroScan, which measures liver stiffness without a biopsy.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a GP referral for a liver ultrasound?

No. You can book a liver ultrasound directly. If the scan shows something that needs further assessment, we can arrange a FibroScan, further imaging or a consultant review.

What is the difference between a liver ultrasound and a FibroScan?

A liver ultrasound shows the appearance of the liver, such as fatty change or cysts. A FibroScan measures how stiff the liver is, which reflects scarring. The two tests complement each other.

Why do I need to fast beforehand?

Fasting for six hours reduces bowel gas and settles the gallbladder, which gives a clearer view of the liver and bile ducts. You may drink water during this time.

Can it diagnose fatty liver?

Yes. Ultrasound is a good way to detect fatty change in the liver and to gauge how marked it is. A FibroScan can then be used to assess any associated scarring.

When will I get my results?

Many findings are explained during the appointment, and a written report is issued within 24 hours.
