- The presence of a deep vein clot

- Clots in the small vessels below the calf reliably
- The cause of the clot on its own
- A clot elsewhere in the body, such as the lungs

No. Warm gel is applied and the probe is moved along the leg, with gentle pressure used to test the veins. It is painless, though a swollen leg may feel tender.

Often, yes. If no clot is found, the scan may show another cause of swelling, such as a Baker's cyst or superficial vein problem, which the radiologist will explain.
