Abdominal Ultrasound

30 minutes appointment Imaging & Diagnostics

£280

An abdominal ultrasound is a scan of the liver, gallbladder, kidneys, pancreas and spleen, used to investigate pain, bloating or abnormal blood tests. At LPHG it costs £280 and needs no GP referral. A consultant radiologist performs the scan and explains the findings, with a written report within 24 hours.

What this scan shows

  • Liver size, texture and fatty change
  • Gallstones and gallbladder inflammation
  • Kidney stones, cysts and blockage
  • The spleen and pancreas
  • Fluid within the abdomen
  • Abdominal aortic aneurysm screening

What it cannot show

  • The bowel in detail, as gas obscures it
  • Small or early tumours that need CT or MRI
  • The cause of every type of abdominal pain

Our abdominal ultrasound assesses the major organs of the upper abdomen in a single visit, in the Harley Street Medical District.

It is a common first-line test for abdominal pain, gallstones and abnormal liver or kidney blood results, with a written report the next day.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a GP referral for an abdominal ultrasound?

No. You can book an abdominal ultrasound directly. If the scan shows something that needs onward care, we can arrange further imaging or a consultant review.

Why do I need to fast beforehand?

Fasting for six hours empties the gallbladder and reduces bowel gas, which gives a clearer view of the liver, gallbladder and pancreas. You may drink water during this time.

Does the scan hurt?

No. Warm gel is applied to the abdomen and a probe is moved gently over the skin. You may be asked to take a deep breath and hold it at times.

Can an abdominal ultrasound find the cause of my bloating?

It can identify many causes, such as gallstones, an enlarged organ or fluid. Because bowel gas limits the view of the bowel itself, some causes of bloating need other tests.

When will I get my results?

Many findings are explained during the appointment, and a written report is issued within 24 hours.
