What this scan shows

Does an ECG hurt?
No. Small sticky electrodes are placed on the skin to record the heart's electrical signals. Nothing enters the body and you feel nothing during the recording.
How long does it take?
The recording itself takes only a few minutes, and the appointment lasts around 20 minutes including preparation.
Can an ECG miss a heart problem?
A standard ECG captures a short snapshot, so intermittent rhythm problems may not appear. If a rhythm that comes and goes is suspected, a longer monitor may be recommended.
Is an ECG the same as an echocardiogram?
No. An ECG records electrical activity, while an echocardiogram is an ultrasound showing the heart's structure and pumping. They are often done together for a fuller picture.
