Spine & Back Pain Assessment

30 minutes appointment MSK & Orthopaedics

£250

A spine and back pain assessment is a specialist review of neck or back pain, covering history, examination and a management plan. At LPHG it costs £250 and needs no GP referral. It identifies mechanical, nerve-related or other causes, advises on whether imaging is needed and sets out a clear treatment pathway.

What this scan shows

  • A diagnosis or working diagnosis for neck or back pain
  • Whether nerve involvement, such as sciatica, is present
  • Assessment of movement, posture and strength
  • Advice on whether an MRI or other imaging is needed
  • A tailored treatment and rehabilitation plan
  • Whether injection or surgical referral is appropriate

What it cannot show

  • It is a clinical assessment, so a scan may be arranged separately
  • It cannot provide MRI findings on the day
  • It does not replace emergency care for severe or worsening symptoms

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a GP referral for a spine assessment?

No. You can book directly. The specialist will assess your symptoms and advise on the next steps, including any imaging needed.

Will I have a scan during the assessment?

Not always. Many back problems are diagnosed clinically. The specialist will decide whether an MRI or other imaging is needed and arrange it where appropriate.

What causes back and neck pain?

Common causes include muscle and joint strain, disc problems and nerve irritation. The assessment identifies the likely cause so treatment can be targeted.

Will I need surgery?

Most back and neck pain improves without surgery. The specialist will explain the options and only recommend a surgical referral where it is likely to help.

What treatments might be recommended?

Options can include physiotherapy, medication, guided injection or, in some cases, onward referral. You receive a clear plan tailored to your symptoms.
