No. You can book a shoulder ultrasound directly. If the scan shows a tear or another problem needing treatment, we can arrange a consultant review or a guided injection.
Can ultrasound detect a rotator cuff tear?
Yes. Ultrasound is a reliable way to assess the rotator cuff tendons and can show partial and full-thickness tears, as well as inflammation and calcification.
Will the scan help with a frozen shoulder?
Ultrasound cannot diagnose a frozen shoulder directly, as it is a clinical diagnosis. It is useful for ruling out other causes of pain and stiffness, such as a cuff tear or bursitis.
Does the scan involve moving my arm?
Yes. The radiologist will ask you to move your arm into different positions so the tendons can be watched in motion. This dynamic assessment is one of the strengths of ultrasound.
When will I get my results?
Many findings are explained to you during the appointment, and a written report is issued within 24 hours.
