A knee ultrasound is a real-time scan of the tendons, ligaments, bursae and soft tissues around the knee, used to investigate pain, swelling or a suspected cyst. At LPHG it costs £280 and needs no GP referral. A consultant radiologist performs the scan and explains the findings, with a report within 24 hours.

Do I need a GP referral for a knee ultrasound?
No. You can book a knee ultrasound directly. If the scan suggests a problem inside the joint, we can arrange onward imaging or a consultant review.
Can ultrasound show a meniscus tear?
Ultrasound cannot reliably assess the menisci, as they sit deep within the joint. If a cartilage or cruciate ligament injury is suspected, an MRI is the appropriate test and can be arranged.
What is a Baker's cyst?
A Baker's cyst is a fluid-filled swelling behind the knee, often linked to joint inflammation. Ultrasound is a good way to confirm one and to distinguish it from other causes of swelling.
Does the scan hurt?
No. Ultrasound is painless. Warm gel is applied and the probe is moved gently over the knee. You may be asked to bend and straighten the knee during the scan.
When will I get my results?
Many findings are explained during the appointment, and a written report is issued within 24 hours.
