A thyroid ultrasound at LPHG is a painless scan that examines the thyroid gland and any lumps or nodules in the neck. It costs £250 and needs no GP referral. A specialist performs the scan and a consultant reports it, describing the size, structure and features of any nodule, with a written report issued afterwards.
What this scan shows
- The size and structure of the thyroid gland
- Thyroid nodules and their features
- Whether a nodule looks solid, cystic or mixed
- Enlargement of the gland (goitre)
- Enlarged lymph nodes in the neck
What it cannot show
- How well the thyroid is working, which needs a blood test
- Whether a nodule is benign or cancerous without a biopsy
- Hormone levels such as TSH, T4 or T3
Our thyroid ultrasound is a detailed, painless scan of the thyroid gland and neck, used to assess nodules, swelling and other changes.
The scan is performed by a specialist and reported by a consultant, and is often combined with a thyroid function blood test for a fuller picture of both structure and function.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a GP referral for a thyroid ultrasound?
No. You can book a thyroid ultrasound directly. If the scan shows something that needs follow-up, our team can advise on the next steps.
Does the scan hurt?
No. It is painless. A specialist applies gel to the neck and moves a probe over the skin. The scan usually takes around 20 minutes.
Can an ultrasound tell if a nodule is cancerous?
Not on its own. It describes features that suggest whether a nodule needs further assessment, but a biopsy is required to confirm the diagnosis.
Should I also have a thyroid blood test?
Often, yes. An ultrasound shows the structure of the gland, while a blood test shows how well it is working. The two are complementary.
When will I get my results?
A consultant reports the scan and a written report is issued afterwards, usually within a few days. Urgent findings are flagged sooner.
